Nummular Eczema / Discoid Eczema

Overview

Nummular dermatitis (also called nummular eczema or discoid eczema) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by coin-shaped (nummular) patches of eczema. The lesions are well-defined, round to oval plaques that are often very itchy. It is commonly triggered by dry skin, environmental irritants, or skin injuries and is more common in men than women.

Key Symptoms

  • Round or oval, coin-shaped plaques of eczema
  • Well-defined borders with red, scaly, or crusted surface
  • Intensely itchy, especially at night
  • Lesions may weep, ooze, or become secondarily infected
  • Typically 1-10 cm in diameter
  • May occur as single or multiple lesions

Legs (most common), Arms, Trunk, Hands, Feet

Care Instructions

  1. Moisturize frequently with thick, fragrance-free creams or ointments.
  2. Apply prescribed topical corticosteroids to active lesions.
  3. Avoid known irritants including harsh soaps, wool, and dry environments.
  4. Take lukewarm baths and apply moisturizer immediately after.
  5. See a dermatologist if lesions do not respond to treatment or become infected.
  6. Oral antibiotics may be needed if secondary bacterial infection develops.
