Overview
Impetigo is a highly contagious superficial bacterial skin infection most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Group A Streptococcus. It primarily affects children and presents as honey-colored crusted lesions or fluid-filled blisters. It spreads through direct contact and can be easily treated with antibiotics.
Key Symptoms
- Red sores that quickly rupture and ooze, then form honey-colored crusts
- Fluid-filled blisters (bullous impetigo)
- Itching in affected areas
- Sores most commonly around the nose and mouth
- Lesions spread easily to other areas through scratching
- Surrounding skin may appear red and inflamed
