Granuloma Annulare
Granuloma Annulare
Overview
A benign inflammatory condition characterized by ring-shaped papules formed by palisading granulomas. The localized form is most common, though disseminated and subcutaneous variants exist. The etiology remains unclear, though associations with diabetes and trauma have been reported.
Key Symptoms
- Flesh-colored or erythematous ring-shaped papules
- Grouped lesions forming circular patterns
- Typically asymptomatic; may have mild pruritus
- Slow progression over months to years
- No systemic involvement in localized form
- Sudden onset often followed by gradual enlargement
Affected Areas
Dorsal hands and fingers, Feet and toes, Elbows, Knees, Extensor surfaces
Care Instructions
- Monitor lesions regularly as many resolve spontaneously over time.
- Apply topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation if symptomatic.
- Avoid unnecessary trauma to lesions.
- Consider intralesional corticosteroid injections for persistent cases.
- Use protective measures if lesions are in areas prone to friction.
- Discuss treatment options with dermatologist if lesions expand.
