Erysipelas

Erysipelas

Overview

Erysipelas is an acute superficial bacterial skin infection, most commonly caused by Group A Streptococcus. It involves the upper dermis and superficial lymphatics, producing a well-demarcated, raised, bright red, painful area of skin. It requires prompt antibiotic treatment to prevent complications.

Key Symptoms

  • Bright red, well-demarcated, raised area of skin
  • Rapid onset with pain, warmth, and swelling
  • Skin surface may have an orange-peel (peau d'orange) texture
  • Fever, chills, and malaise often accompany the rash
  • May have a clear entry point such as a wound or crack in the skin
  • Spreading red streaks (lymphangitis) may be visible

Affected Areas

Lower legs (most common), Face, Arms, Trunk

Care Instructions

  1. Seek medical attention promptly as antibiotics are required.
  2. Complete the full course of prescribed antibiotics (usually penicillin or amoxicillin).
  3. Elevate the affected limb to reduce swelling.
  4. Apply cool compresses for comfort.
  5. Treat any underlying skin breaks, wounds, or athlete's foot that may have served as entry points.
  6. See a doctor urgently if symptoms worsen despite antibiotic therapy.
