Overview
A chronic form of cutaneous lupus erythematosus characterized by well-demarcated erythematous patches and plaques with follicular plugging. The condition primarily affects sun-exposed areas and can result in permanent scarring and alopecia. Systemic lupus involvement occurs in 5–10% of patients.
Key Symptoms
- Erythematous patches with well-defined borders
- Follicular plugging and central atrophy
- Hyperkeratotic scaling
- Photosensitivity exacerbating lesions
- Scarring alopecia if scalp is involved
- Depigmentation and hyperpigmentation at lesion edges

Scalp, Face (cheeks and nose), Ears, Lips, Neck
Care Instructions
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+) daily and avoid sun exposure.
- Use topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors on lesions.
- Consider antimalarial agents such as hydroxychloroquine.
- Monitor for systemic lupus erythematosus with periodic laboratory testing.
- Use photoprotective clothing and hats when outdoors.
- Avoid irritants and trauma to sensitive areas.
