Acne
Acne Vulgaris
Overview
Acne vulgaris is the most common skin condition, caused by clogged hair follicles from excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacterial overgrowth. It manifests as comedones, papules, pustules, and in severe cases, nodules and cysts.
Key Symptoms
- Open comedones (blackheads) and closed comedones (whiteheads)
- Inflammatory red papules and pus-filled pustules
- Deep, painful nodules or cysts in severe cases
- Oily skin, especially in the T-zone of the face
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after lesions heal
- Potential scarring from deep or repeatedly inflamed lesions
Affected Areas
Face, Forehead, Chest, Upper back, Shoulders
Care Instructions
- Wash affected areas gently twice daily with a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser.
- Use OTC treatments with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or adapalene (Differin).
- Avoid picking, squeezing, or popping acne — this worsens inflammation and causes scarring.
- Use oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers and sunscreen.
- See a dermatologist for moderate to severe acne (retinoids, antibiotics, or isotretinoin).
- Be patient — most acne therapies take 6-8 weeks to show noticeable improvement.
